But if there is a family history of eye problems, the child may need to be referred to an optometrist or an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive eye examination. Even if there are no known risk factors or family history, it is recommended that children get their vision checked at 6 months of age, 3 years old, and before first grade.
A few signs that may help in determining if your child needs a more thorough eye exam include:
Early detection and treatment is the key to providing your child with the best opportunity of having healthy eyes and good vision. If you have concerns about your child’s vision, call or make an appointment with the Florida Vision Foundation to schedule a complimentary eye exam for your infant or child.
Our Founder, Keith Sutcliffe decided to start The Florida Vision Foundation in memory of his late son, Jeremy who has passed on. Keith’s son, Jeremy, was special needs and was born with a hole in his heart. Jeremy started wearing glasses from the time he was 6 months old. When Keith would bring his child to classes around other special needs children he started to notice the others with poorly made glasses, and always helped out those children in need. After his son's passing he felt the urge to start a foundation to help others, especially underprivileged children.
